PMU Historical Record/Mandate

Founded in the winter of 2008 by Craig Joseph, Hillary Winter and Jillian Waite, Pick-Me-Up Artists Collective brings together emerging visual artists for the purpose of fuelling inspiration and providing creative outlets. Based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Pick-Me-Up creates educational, collaborative and career-enhancing opportunities between artists by centralizing web presence and building a foundation of artists interested in showing outside of the conventional commercial gallery scene. Pick-Me-Up offers members a socially supportive network which will encourage the cultivation of ideas and the continuing development of skills and concepts.

To date Pick-Me-Up has received two Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Professional Project Grants, by which they hosted three member-run “art-shops”; The IDEA Artshop with Jillian Forgarty, CYANOTYPE with Hillary Winter; and Storytelling, Chance and Collaboration with Benjamin Allain.

PMU has also organized and curated three exhibitions featuring the work of all or most of PMUs members;

The Launch, Wild Lily Dance Centre, St. John’s Newfoundland, September 2009.

The (re)Launch, JL Gallery, Corner Brook, November 2009.

Of A Surface, A1C Gallery, St. John’s, Newfoundland, December 2009.
