Statement
My work is based on memory and how it reacts to time. As smoke is an indication of fire, and footprints are indexical to walking, I create work that is in itself an index. ‘Traces’ is a body of work that explores issues of memory, time and existence. These large scaled photographic drawings are merely shadows of delicate, fleeting objects. They capture a memory of these objects before they quickly disappear. This is a demonstration of the ephemeral nature of mind and memory in response to time and space.
I explore this theme in different media as well. I have a fascination with maps. I see them as beautiful, intricate drawings. I am also interested in the idea of memory maps. People often memorize their surroundings, favourite places, routines, and create their own memory map of their surroundings. We all see things differently, we view only from our own perspective. I use layers of mixed media and light washes of paint to create colourful and textural pieces. Layering allows the image to disappear and reappear throughout the creation of the work, mimicking memory as it responds to time.
