Statement
My artwork illustrates the beauty of the rugged landscape of my native province, Newfoundland and Labrador. Through my paintings I have aimed to capture the raw magnificence of its nature. I am currently working on a body of work that reflects the physical attractiveness of the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.
While working on this project I decided to actually immerse myself into my subject matter. I set up my easel at different locations: on a wharf, at the beach, on a grassy hill and even on a large rock.
Using a palette knife, brushes and various oil paints, I chose to use impasto; a painting style characterized by use of thick, juicy color application on the oil painting canvas. I have been influenced by the characteristics of the works of expressionist painters, including their brush strokes, emphasis on the changing qualities of light in their work, and their use of ordinary subject matter. Painting has given me great joy and satisfaction. I feel my work is successful if it causes the observer to stop, even for a moment, and sense the rugged resilience and beauty of out port Newfoundland and Labrador.
